I moved to California in 1968 for graduate school at Berkeley. Having spent my previous life on the east coast, the opportunities to experience magnificent stretches of open space were overwhelming. These images convey a sense of peace and solitude that unfortunately didn't exist. California was crowded, even in 1971. Reaching each of the destinations involved a nerve-wracking competition with what seemed like an infinite number of people with the same goal. Amazing to think that the population has doubled since I took the photographs.
